Amazing wildlife and landscapes

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

As a photographer and historian, traveling to locations other than your home state can be a rewarding vacation with a little pre-planning. One thing to remember is to do your homework before making a final decision in your travel plans. I have decided at the last minute to go someplace, especially during Fall & Spring bird migration, without fully doing my homework on the area I was traveling and missed a few historic places I would have normally stopped. To get the most out of a weekend, use Google maps to see what other areas are nearby that could also locations photograph. You can simply list keywords in Google Maps to bring up places that may not be listed. For example, if you are traveling to New Orleans. Type "historic cemeteries" or "plantations" to bring up all of the locations of your search. This will save you a lot of time if you pre-plan location shoots and time of day to create some of your best work. Download a good weather app that gives you times for sunrise and sunset, as well as, other important information what the weather will be during your trip. If you want to find the golden hour, there are apps that tell you the times that are optimal to capture the suns golden rays in your photographs.

The photos below are a few from trips to very scenic places in Louisiana and Oklahoma. The Brown Pelican is not quite like its relative the American White Pelican. Unlike its cousin, the Brown Pelican is a diving bird that can make for spectacular shots if you can catch them diving out of the sky for fish! The second photo is from a planation in Louisiana showing the huge live oak tree that shades one of the former slave quarters. The final photograph is from the Talimena Scenic Byway in Oklahoma. During the fall, the Ouachita Mountains become a favorite place for one of the most scenic drives to see the fall colors as the trees change colors. Follow my blog as I travel around Oklahoma and surrounding states to photograph some of the best landscapes nature offers!
